Understanding Your Orthodontic Coverage

Common questions about orthodontic insurance

What is orthodontic coverage?

Here’s something worth knowing: orthodontic benefits are their own thing, completely separate from your standard dental coverage. Most insurance plans set aside a lifetime maximum, typically ranging from $1,000 to $3,000, that can be put toward braces or similar treatment. For most people, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime benefit, though some family plans allow it once for each child, which is a nice bonus!

How much will my insurance cover?

Every insurance plan is a little different, but most cover somewhere between 25% and 50% of orthodontic treatment, up to your plan’s lifetime maximum. Not sure what that means for you? No worries! We’ll dig into your specific benefits before your consultation and come prepared with a clear, easy-to-understand breakdown of what’s covered and what to expect out of pocket.

When does insurance pay?

One thing to keep in mind is that most insurance companies spread their payments out over the course of your treatment rather than sending one big check upfront. We stay in close contact with your provider to keep everything on track, and as those payments come in, we apply them directly to your balance, which means a lower monthly payment for you.

What if I don't have orthodontic coverage?

Don’t let insurance or the lack of it stand between you and the smile you’ve always wanted. We have financing options and flexible payment plans designed to make treatment accessible for everyone. When you come in for your consultation, we’ll walk through all the possibilities together and put together something that actually fits your life and your budget.

Can I use my FSA or HSA?

If you have an FSA or HSA, you’re in luck! Orthodontic treatment is a fully eligible expense under both accounts, so you can put those pre-tax dollars to work and keep more money in your pocket. It’s one of those little-known ways to make treatment even more affordable and we’ll make sure you have all the documentation you need to make the reimbursement process as smooth as possible.

What information do I need to provide?

When you come in for your first appointment, just remember to bring your insurance card! We’ll need your policy number, group number, and the name of the policyholder to get things started. And if you’re not quite sure what your orthodontic coverage looks like, don’t sweat it. We’re happy to call your insurance company on your behalf and figure it all out for you.
