Is It an Emergency?
Most orthodontic concerns can wait until normal office hours, but a few situations need prompt attention.
True Emergencies Include:
Severe pain that doesn't respond to over-the-counter medication
Significant swelling of the face, gums, or neck
Trauma or injury to the face, teeth, or mouth
Infection with fever
Difficulty breathing or swallowing
Severe bleeding that won't stop
If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, please call our office immediately or seek emergency medical care.
Common Orthodontic Issues
Here’s what to do for common orthodontic problems
Loose or Broken Bracket
Low PriorityWhat to Do:
- If it's still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover with wax
- If it has come off completely, keep it safe and bring it to your next appointment
- Call our office to schedule a repair appointment
When to call: Within 1-2 business days
Poking Wire
Medium PriorityWhat to Do:
- Try using the eraser end of a pencil to gently push the wire down
- Cover the end with orthodontic wax for comfort
- Do not cut the wire yourself
- Contact our office if the discomfort persists
When to call: Same day if causing severe discomfort
Lost or Broken Retainer
Medium PriorityWhat to Do:
- Stop wearing the broken retainer immediately
- Keep the pieces if possible
- Contact our office right away to prevent teeth from shifting
- We may need to take new impressions for a replacement
When to call: Within 24 hours
Severe Pain or Swelling
High PriorityWhat to Do:
- Rinse mouth with warm salt water
- Take over-the-counter pain medication as directed
- Apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth
- Call our emergency line immediately
When to call: Immediately
Injury to Face, Teeth, or Mouth
High PriorityWhat to Do:
- Apply ice to injured areas
- If there is bleeding, apply gentle pressure with clean gauze
- Save any broken teeth or appliances
- Contact our office or go to the emergency room if severe
When to call: Immediately
Loose Band or Spacer
Low PriorityWhat to Do:
- Keep the band or spacer if it comes out completely
- Do not try to reattach it yourself
- Call our office to schedule a repair
- Continue normal oral hygiene
When to call: Within 1-2 business days
After Hours Care
We’re generally in the office Monday, through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. If you have a genuine emergency after hours, call our main number and follow the prompts to reach our emergency line, someone from our team will respond as quickly as they can.
For life-threatening emergencies, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room.
