During your complimentary consultation, Dr. Abbink will examine your teeth, take x-rays if needed, and discuss your goals. We’ll recommend the best treatment option based on your needs, lifestyle, and preferences. Both braces and Invisalign can effectively treat most orthodontic issues.

What age should my child have an orthodontic evaluation?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this age, we can identify potential issues early and determine the best time to begin treatment if needed. Early evaluation doesn’t always mean early treatment, but it allows us to monitor development and intervene at the optimal time.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

Treatment time varies depending on the complexity of your case, but most patients wear braces or Invisalign for 12-24 months. Some cases may be shorter (6-12 months for minor corrections) or longer (24-36 months for complex cases). We’ll provide a personalized treatment timeline during your consultation.

Does orthodontic treatment hurt?

You may experience some discomfort for the first few days after getting braces or starting Invisalign, and after adjustments. This is normal and means your teeth are moving! The discomfort is typically mild and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Most patients adjust quickly and find treatment very manageable.

Treatment & Appointments

How often will I need appointments?

Most patients visit us every 6-10 weeks for adjustments and progress checks. These appointments typically take 15-30 minutes. We’ll schedule your appointments in advance and work around your schedule as much as possible. Emergency appointments are available if you have an issue that needs immediate attention.

Can I still play sports with braces?

Absolutely! We recommend wearing a mouthguard to protect your braces and teeth during contact sports. We can provide a special orthodontic mouthguard, or you can purchase one at most sporting goods stores. With proper protection, you can continue all your normal activities.

What happens if I miss an appointment?

Please call us as soon as possible to reschedule. Missed appointments can delay your treatment progress, so it’s important to attend all scheduled visits. We understand that conflicts arise, and we’ll work with you to find a convenient time to reschedule.

Can I still see my regular dentist during orthodontic treatment?

Yes! It’s essential to continue regular dental checkups and cleanings every 6 months during orthodontic treatment. Your dentist and our office work as a team to ensure your teeth stay healthy throughout treatment. Let your dentist know you’re in orthodontic treatment so they can take extra care around your braces.

How much does orthodontic treatment cost?

Treatment costs vary based on the complexity of your case and the type of treatment you choose. We offer braces and Invisalign starting as low as $175/month with flexible payment plans. During your free consultation, we’ll provide a detailed cost breakdown specific to your treatment plan.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes! We accept most major dental insurance plans and will help you maximize your benefits. Our team will verify your coverage, submit claims on your behalf, and explain exactly what your insurance will cover. We handle all the paperwork to make the process as easy as possible for you.

What payment options do you offer?

We offer multiple payment options to fit your budget: flexible monthly payment plans with no interest, major credit cards, CareCredit healthcare financing, HSA and FSA accounts, and discounts for payment in full. We’ll work with you to create a payment plan that works for your family.

Is there a discount for treating multiple family members?

Yes! We offer family discounts when multiple family members are in treatment at the same time. We also offer referral rewards when you refer friends and family to our practice. Ask our team about current promotions and discounts.

Daily Life with Braces

What foods should I avoid with braces?

Avoid hard foods (ice, hard candy, nuts), sticky foods (caramel, gum, taffy), crunchy foods (popcorn, chips), and foods you bite into (apples, corn on the cob – cut them first). These foods can damage brackets and wires. You can still enjoy most of your favorite foods with some modifications!

How do I keep my teeth clean with braces?

Brush after every meal for at least 2 minutes, focusing on brushing above and below brackets. Floss daily using a floss threader or water flosser. Use a proxabrush to clean between brackets. We’ll show you proper techniques at your appointment and provide you with all the tools you need.

What do I do if a bracket comes off?

Don’t panic! This is a common occurrence. Call our office to schedule a repair appointment. If the bracket is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with wax for comfort. If it came off completely, save it and bring it to your appointment. Most repairs take just a few minutes.

Can I chew gum with braces?

We recommend avoiding gum during treatment as it can stick to brackets and wires. If you must chew gum, choose sugar-free gum and chew carefully. However, it’s best to avoid it altogether to prevent damage to your braces and reduce the risk of cavities.

After Treatment

Will I need to wear a retainer?

Yes! Retainers are essential to maintain your beautiful new smile. Your teeth have a natural tendency to shift back toward their original position, and retainers prevent this. Most patients wear retainers full-time for the first few months, then transition to nighttime wear. Following retainer instructions is crucial for long-term success.

How long do I need to wear my retainer?

To keep your teeth straight forever, you’ll need to wear your retainer indefinitely – typically just at night after the initial full-time period. Think of it like exercising: if you want to maintain the results, you need to keep it up! The good news is nighttime retainer wear becomes routine and easy.

What happens at my final appointment?

We’ll remove your braces, clean and polish your teeth, and take final photos and impressions for your retainer. You’ll receive detailed retainer care instructions and schedule your retainer check appointments. This is an exciting day – we’ll celebrate your beautiful new smile with you!

Will my teeth stay straight forever?

With proper retainer wear, yes! Your teeth will stay in their new positions as long as you follow your retainer schedule. If you stop wearing your retainer, your teeth may shift. We’ll monitor your progress with periodic retainer checks to ensure everything stays perfect.
