Welcome to Ventura Orthodontic Group,

Dr. Bruce Abbink, Orthodontist in Ventura, has been serving families in Ventura County and surrounding areas since 1972.

We are providers of  Invisalign, Invisalign Teen, clear braces, regular brackets, and offer financing.  Your free first visit will provide important information to acquaint you with our practice and orthodontics. Our office is committed to providing you with the very best in personalized, appropriate care, along with making every visit informative, comfortable, and as pleasant as possible.  Our staff is committed and friendly, working together as a highly experienced orthodontic team.  We want to you to achieve a beautiful, healthy smile while having a wonderful treatment experience.

We are always excited about meeting new patients during their first visit to our office.   It also gives you the opportunity to meet our friendly staff.  We will take the time to listen to your concerns, review your medical and dental history, and answer any of your questions regarding orthodontic treatment.  Please allow 30 minutes of time for this first appointment.

No fee is charged for the initial evaluation or any future re-evaluation visits prior to treatment.

If treatment is indicated the next step will be to take diagnostic records.  These usually consist of orthodontic X-rays, study models and photographs.  After analyzing these records, Dr.  Abbink will discuss the best course of treatment per your diagnosis and individual situation, and discuss with you the details of the proposed treatment plan.  Our goal is for you to clearly understand your treatment options and have all your questions answered prior to starting treatment.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a child has an initial orthodontic evaluation at the age of seven. While most children aren’t treated at this age, some problems can be indentified that would best be treated by early or “interceptive” treatment. Some of these problems include:
  • Underbite
  • Posterior crossbite
  • Upper teeth protruding
  • Severe crowding
  • Thumb sucking problem
  • Missing or extra teeth
  • Impacted teeth

Braces aren’t just for kids anymore. Tooth alignment can be changed at any age if your gums and bone structure are healthy. We offer a variety of treatments that are designed for different age groups – including adults. A new smile can begin today. Orthodontic treatment at later stages in life can dramatically improve your personal appearance and self-esteem. Improving the health of your teeth and gums is equally important. Crooked teeth and a bad bite can contribute to gum and bone loss, tooth decay, abnormal wear of the tooth enamel and surfaces, headaches and jaw joint (TMJ/TMD) pain.

Good news! The new techniques and appliances we use greatly reduce discomfort levels, decrease the frequency of visits, shorten treatment time and may allow you to choose from several options. Your options may include metal braces, translucent braces or transparent aligners that can be worn at night to improve mild cases of misaligned teeth.

During the initial examination, we will be able to determine the best possible treatment for your individual needs. During this initial examination, we can outline the treatment plan, time of treatment expected and the approximate cost.

A large percentage of our patients are adults, and they agree that it’s never too late to improve their greatest asset – their smile.

Invisalign is the clear way to straighten teeth without braces, using aligners. Aligners are removable and virtually invisible, which means you can straighten your teeth without anyone knowing; and you can still eat and drink what you want. Also, you can brush and floss normally to maintain healthy gums and teeth; and there are no wires, metal or brackets to cause mouth abrasions.

Many of our patients had never considered traditional braces but are now happily and comfortably improving their smiles with Invisalign.

If the thought of wearing braces has held you back from achieving your dream smile, there is now a new alternative.  Invisalign is a series of clear, customized  trays that incrementally move your teeth without brackets or wires.  The aligners can be removed to eat, drink, brush and floss.

Please call our office to schedule a consultation to see if you are a candidate for Invisalign.

Congratulations on your new smile!  Retention is the important stage of treatment following the removal of your appliances.  In general the retainers are worn full time for six months and then at nighttime indefinitely.

Retainer instructions:

  • If your retainers are lost or broken please call our office immediately for a replacement.  Do not wait as your teeth will shift.
  • When your retainers are not in your mouth, they need to be placed in your case.  Do not wrap them in napkins because they get thrown away.  Do not place them in your pocket because the wires will bend or the plastic will crack.
  • Keep them away from your dogs…they love to chew them.
  • Brush your retainers once a day with lukewarm water and toothpaste.  You can also use Retainer Brite. You may order from or
  • Do not leave retainers in a hot car or place them in hot water.
  • Don’t wear them during contact sports, in the pool or ocean.
  • Bring them to all your appointments
  • You may find it difficult to speak for several days, but don’t despair, practicing out loud will speed up your learning process.

The cost of treatment depends on the severity of the patient’s problem. You will be able to discuss fees and payment options before treatment begins. We have payment plans to suit different budgets, including a no-down-payment option through a third-party finance company. We work hard to make orthodontics affordable. If you have an orthodontic insurance benefit, we will be happy to file your claim and accept assignment of benefits, as a courtesy.

In an effort to keep orthodontic fees down while maintaining the highest level of professional care, we have established this financial policy:

If full payment is made at the onset of treatment, we will offer a bookkeeping discount. (If you have insurance, we will offer a discount for payment of your portion of the fee that will not be covered by insurance.)

To fit your individual needs, financial arrangements can be made to extend your payments over a period of 24 months. Additinally, for your convenience, we accept payment by Visa, MasterCard,  and Discover; and, we also offer automatic debit from you checking account.

In cases of serious delinquency, treatment will be discontinued, although we will make every effort to accommodate patients with temporary difficulties.

If you have insurance, we will help you to determine the coverage you have available. We will accept assignment of benefits. The balance will be arranged for you to pay (see above). Professional care is provided to you, our patient, and not to an insurance company. Thus, the insurance company is responsible to the patient, and the patient is responsible to the doctor. We will help in every way we can in filing your claim and handling insurance questions from our office on your behalf.
